Why Do I Have to Play Songs I Don't Like?

Learning to play the piano is a lot like learning to play softball. To be able to play a game with your friends you need to learn the rules. You also need to develop the fundamental skills of running, hitting and catching before you can even be on a team.

When you learn to play the piano, you need to learn how to read notes, count their time values and train your fingers to do what you want them to do. Coordination of these skills may take a little time to develop. The music your teacher selects for you is designed to help you learn the skills that will allow you to eventually play any music you like.

So stick with your lessons, and in time you’ll be able to play well enough to choose more of your own music. Perhaps you could even have your teacher help you with it. Then you’ll really be off and running.
